About This Performance

The concert on Saturday, January 31 is a “Behind the Notes” performance. This weekend, the Saturday concert will include the Khachaturian concert with Bendix-Balgley in the first half and “Pictures at an Exhibition” in the second half, with WQED-FM’s Jim Cunningham revealing the intricacies of the piece while the orchestra demonstrates his insights.

Aram Khachaturian was about to become a father when he wrote his Violin Concerto.  “My imagination seemed to fly; themes came to me in such abundance that I had a hard time putting them into order.” The result is a vastly entertaining work full of exotic harmonies and dance rhythms. Concertmaster Noah Bendix-Balgley is the soloist.  Mussorgsky composed Pictures at an Exhibition for solo piano; Ravel’s stunning orchestration turned it into one of the cornerstones of the orchestral repertoire.
