Erin Wall
When Canadian-American soprano Erin Wall recently stepped in for Karita Mattila as Donna Anna on opening night of the Lyric Opera of Chicago’s 2004/2005 season in a new Peter Stein/Christoph Eschenbach production of Don Giovanni, the Chicago Tribune wrote, “Erin Wall took over the vocally demanding role with such gutsy, shining authority that she was given a prolonged ovation after her first act aria, a thrilling “Or sai chi l’onore”.
This season Miss Wall returns to the Lyric Opera of Chicago as Freia/Das Rheingold, Gerhilde/Die Walküre. She makes her debut with the Aix-en-Provence Festival as Fiordiligi in a new Patrice Chéreau/Daniel Harding production, which will later be seen both at the Palais Garnier in Paris and at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna next season. Erin Wall appears in Toronto in a televised concert of Massenet arias and scenes as well as in The Messiah with the Toronto Symphony, in Calgary for Strauss’ Four Last Songs and Respighi’s Deità Silvane and in Portland as the soprano soloist in Brahms’ Deutsches Requiem. Under the auspices of the Marilyn Horne Foundation, Miss Wall will be featured in recital in New York City at the Church of St. Bartholomew’s as part of their 2004-2005 "On Wings of Song" series and at Carnegie’s Zankel Hall in "The Song Continues" series.
Future seasons include several return engagements at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, debuts with the Vancouver Opera as Marguerite/Faust, the Teatro Real in Madrid as Anne Trulove in a new production of The Rake’s Progress and as Belinda in concerts of Dido and Aeneas at the Théâtre du Châtelet.
For the past three seasons, Erin Wall has been a member of the Lyric Opera of Chicago Center for American Artists, where she recently sang Marguerite/Faust during the 2003-2004 season. At Lyric Opera, she has appeared as the First Lady/Die Zauberflöte, Gerhilde/Die Walküre, amongst other roles. Erin Wall recently made her South American debut as Marguerite at the Teatro Municipal in Santiago de Chile. Miss Wall's recent concert activity includes the London Symphony Orchestra and the Grant Park Music Festival (for Britten’s War Requiem in both cases) and the Chicago and Vancouver Symphonies, and recent festival appearances include the City of London Festival and the Ravinia Festival.
Born to American parents in Calgary, Alberta, Miss Wall studied at the Vancouver Academy of Music throughout her childhood, and holds degrees from Western Washington University and Rice University. She also studied voice at the Aspen Music Festival and the Music Academy of the West, where she was a student of Marilyn Horne. Roles in her current repertoire include the title role in Carlisle Floyd's Susannah, Pamina/Die Zauberflöte, Violetta/La Traviata, Micaëla/Carmen, Anne Trulove/The Rake's Progress, Contessa/Le Nozze di Figaro, Marguerite/Faust, Thaïs/Thaïs, and Donna Anna/Don Giovanni in addition to an extensive concert and recital repertoire.
Miss Wall has received several awards and career grants – most recently, she was chosen to receive a 2004 Award from the ARIA Foundation. From the Richard Tucker Foundation she has been the recipient of a Richard Tucker Award (2004) and a Sara Tucker Study Grant (2002). Erin Wall represented Canada in the Finals of the 2003 Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. In addition, she has been an awardee in the Dallas Opera Career Grant Competition, the George London Foundation Awards, the MacAllister Awards, the Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions, and the Florida Grand Opera's Young Artists' Competition.
