William Caballero



Principal Horn
Anonymous Foundation Chair

The 2009-2010 Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO) Season represents William Caballero’s 21st year as Principal Horn with the PSO. Joining in May 1989, Caballero previously held Principal Horn positions with the Houston Symphony, Houston Grand Opera and Hartford Symphony. As well as, Third Horn positions with the Montreal Symphony, Montreal Opera, and acting Third Horn with the Boston Symphony and Boston Pops. He has also performed as guest Principal Horn with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the St. Louis Symphony.

Born in New Mexico and reared in Wisconsin, Caballero’s early studies of the horn included working under Larry Simons, Barry Benjamin and Basil Tyler, as well as studying the piano and pipe organ. Caballero graduated from New England Conservatory in Boston where he studied with Richard Mackey and Thomas Newell, both former members of the Boston Symphony.

Presently he is Artist Lecture of the Horn at Carnegie Mellon University School of Music and chairs the Brass Department there. Formerly he was Artist Lecturer of the Horn at Indiana University, Bloomington, Rice University, and Duquesne University. He has been invited and presented master classes throughout the world including Northwestern University, New England Conservatory of Music, University of Indiana, Bloomington, The Cleveland Institute of Music, The Curtis Institute of Music, Manhattan School of Music, Lynn University of Boca Raton, Coe University, Orford Arts Centre, the New World Symphony, The National Orchestral Institute at the University of Maryland, University of Arizona, University of Missouri, in addition to, the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo, Japan, the Beijing Conservatory, and the Shanghai Conservatory. Caballero is also a member of the Artist Board of the Summit Brass (an ensemble consisting of top brass players from major U.S. orchestras) and performs regularly with them. Horn Workshops have included the Northeastern Horn Workshop in Boston and the Southeastern Horn Workshop in Durham, North Carolina.

As a chamber musician, Caballero is also in demand and has collaborated with violinists such as Gil Shaham, Joseph Silverstein and Philip Setzer, and pianists including Andre’ Previn, Christoph Eshenbach, Orli Shaham and Andre Watts. He has worked with jazz musician and composer, Chris Brubeck, and principal players of the Philadelphia Orchestra, as well as ensembles that include the Tokyo String Quartet, Trio Johannas, Principal Strings of the Berlin Philharmonic in Sapporo, Japan, The Super World Orchestra in Tokyo, Japan, The Bay Chamber Concert Series in Rockport, Maine, The St. Barth’s Music Festival in the French West Indies, The Grand Teton Music Festival in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, The Bellingham Music Festival of Bellingham, and The Sewickley BACHfest in Sewickley, Pennsylvania. He is also a member of the Pittsburgh Symphony Brass. The group is preparing for an upcoming tour of China in 2010.

Recent solo and performance opportunities have included performing Brahms’ Horn Trio in E-flat major with Gil and Orli Shaham in Zankel Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York, The Virginia Arts Festival, The John Hopkins University Music Recital Series, performing live on National Public Radio’s (NPR) “Performance Today” in NPR’s Washington, DC studios, and solo engagements with the Cedar Rapids Symphony and the Kenosha (Wisconsin) Symphony. He also gave the first horn recital in the 75-year history of the Pittsburgh Y Music Series, as well as recitals at the Boston Conservatory and the North Carolina School of the Arts.

In May 1992 Caballero premiered Benjamin Lees’ Horn Concerto for Horn and Orchestra with the PSO under the baton of then Music Director Lorin Maazel. Following the performances in Pittsburgh, he performed Lees’ Concerto in Spain, Germany, and England with the PSO on tour. In May 1996 Caballero recorded the concerto with the PSO and Lorin Maazel for New World Record.

Previous solo performances with the PSO have included Richard Strauss’ Horn Concerto No. 2 in E-flat with Maestro Maazel, Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 2 in E-flat with Maestro Previn, Mozart Concerto fragments with PSO Concertmaster Andres’ Cardenas, Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings with Maestro Stanislaw Skrowaczewski and Anthony Griffey, and Schumann’s Konzertstück in F, for four horns and orchestra with his PSO horn colleagues under the baton of Maestro Sir John Elliot Gardener.

William holds the PSO’s Anonymous Foundation Prinicipal Horn Chair.
