About This Performance

Originally commissioned by the famous violinist and composer Nicolo Paganini, Harold in Italy could be called "Berlioz in Italy," as it is actually inspired by the composer’s own travels and wanderings in the Abruzzi region. Nature-painting at its finest, Harold in Italy conjures images of the Adriatic coast. One of our most frequently requested works, Holst’s The Planets is a stunning portrait of the astrological deities associated with Mars, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
Composer Gustav Holst was fascinated by astrology. The Planets is as much about the astrological gods as it is about the physical planets. Come and enjoy displays about this popular work from both the perspective of the scientific side as well as the astrological deity side. There will be different stations around Heinz Hall where audiences may learn more about the solar system, have their tarot cards read and hear about recent scientific advancements, such as space travel!
