About This Performance

 |
The Roman Festival...in Pittsburgh!
Italian composer Ottorino Respighi is well-known for his symphonic poems - musical works that vividly describe the places and events of the Eternal City, Rome. Respighi was a master of orchestration and had a passion for ancient Italian music. The Feste romane, or "Roman Festivals" displays his passion in all of its glory. The piece was a celebration reflecting the revived spirit of nationalism in Italy at this time, descriptive of four celebrations:
- Circenses - the Circus Maximus of ancient Rome
- The Jubilee - evocative of the Pilgrimage made by Catholics to the Holy City
- The October Festival – a celebration of hunting, food, wine and love
- The Epiphany – triumphant carnival music featuring peasant dances and trumpet calls
Join us an hour before the concert for our re-creation of the Roman Festival. Learn more about Roman history, hear the Italian love songs on accordian and enjoy Italian food by Lidia's, Atria's and Manny's. |
