About This Performance

The Roman Festival...in Pittsburgh!

Italian composer Ottorino Respighi is well-known for his symphonic poems - musical works that vividly describe the places and events of the Eternal City, Rome. Respighi was a master of orchestration and had a passion for ancient Italian music. The Feste romane, or "Roman Festivals" displays his passion in all of its glory. The piece was a celebration reflecting the revived spirit of nationalism in Italy at this time, descriptive of four celebrations:
  • Circenses - the Circus Maximus of ancient Rome
  • The Jubilee - evocative of the Pilgrimage made by Catholics to the Holy City
  • The October Festival – a celebration of hunting, food, wine and love
  • The Epiphany – triumphant carnival music featuring peasant dances and trumpet calls

Join us an hour before the concert for our re-creation of the Roman Festival. Learn more about Roman history, hear the Italian love songs on accordian and enjoy Italian food by Lidia's, Atria's and Manny's.
Concert Preludes
All Mellon Grand Classics concerts feature a pre-concert talk one hour prior to performance that provides additional perspectives on the program. This concert's Prelude will be hosted by the PSO's Vice President of Artistic Planning Robert Moir.
