Concert Preludes
All Mellon Grand Classics concerts feature a pre-concert talk one hour prior to performance that provides additional perspectives on the program. This concert's Prelude will be hosted by Resident Conductor Lawrence Loh.
Post-Concert Artist Chats
Immediately following the performances on Friday and Saturday night, join us in the Hall for an Artist Chat with Maestro Leonard Slatkin and composer John Corigliano. This interactive format will allow for questions from the audience and discussion about the performance.
Live Music by Cellofourte
Following the performance on Saturday night, join us in the Grand Tier Lounge for a free performance by cello quartet, Cellofourte. Cellofourte is not your average quartet; come prepared to hear "classical" music as you never have before. All classically trained, their repertoire spans genres from Rock to Bach. The PSO is proud to present 2007/2008 Composer of the Year, John Corigliano, winner of a Pulitzer Prize (Symphony No. 1) and an Oscar for Best Film Score (The Red Violin). With chamber music, opera and symphonies in his repertoire, Corigliano is a prolific composer who has changed the landscape of new music, and a leader in the current trend toward communicative new music that is embraced by large audiences.
Throughout the Mellon Grand Classics and the Pittsburgh Symphony Chamber Orchestra series, we will be performing works by Corigliano, including:
- Promenade Overture, September 28 & 30 (Heinz Hall)
- Phantasmagoria, December 6 (WVU), 7 & 9 (Heinz Hall)
- The Red Violin Concerto with Joshua Bell, January 10 (Lincoln Park), 11, 12 & 13 (Heinz Hall)
- Percussion Concerto with Dame Evelyn Glennie, February 21, 22 & 23
(Heinz Hall)
- Voyage, March 27 (Oakland) & 29 (USC)
- Symphony No. 2, Scherzo, March 27 (Oakland) & 29 (USC)
- Tournaments Overture, April 18 & 20 (Heinz Hall)
In February, the PSO performs the world premiere of Corigliano's Percussion Concerto - the only new musical work by Corigliano in the world for 2007-2008. And, we'll be celebrating Corigliano's 70th birthday! |
