Pittsburgh (Public) Schools Statistical Report on Music Education
In a 1998 Pittsburgh Public Schools Statistical Report requested
by the Pittsburgh Music Advocacy Group, the following findings
supported the importance of music education in our schools. The
report showed that students with 3 or more years of instrumental
or choral music courses achieved the following compared to students
with no music courses:
- 5.3% higher graduation rate
- 0% drop-out rate (compare with 7.4% for non-music students)
- Music students' grade-point averages were .56 points higher
than non-music students (2.90 compared to 2.34)
- Music students scored 19.2% higher on ITBS math and 17.3%
higher on ITBS reading standardized tests
There is a consistent trend across levels of groups indicating
higher performance on all variables, relative to increased participation
in instrumental/choral music courses.
