APPLICATION INFORMATION

The NEH has released a detailed guide for applicants, which we recommend that you read.

Full-time teachers in American public middle and high schools (grades 5 to 12) are eligible to apply, as are teachers, from parochial, charter, independent, private, and home-schools (including home-schooling parents). Americans teaching abroad are also eligible if a majority of the students are American citizens. Librarians and school administrators are also eligible.

Individual applicants may apply for up to three separate NEH projects (seminars, institutes, workshops), but may only participate in one per summer.

A knowledge of music is not required for the Dvořák institute. You will not be asked to read music or play an instrument. We encourage applications from teachers of all relevant subjects, including Social Studies, Music, and Literature. We also encourage colleagues from complementary disciplines at the same school to apply to the institute to foster collaborative teaching.

Selection Criteria

Selections will be made by a committee of three, including Director Joe Horowitz. Among equally qualified candidates, first consideration will be given to those who have never participated in an NEH seminar, institute, or workshop, and to those who have not participated in the last three years (2007 – 2009).

Stipend and Conditions

Teachers selected will be given a $2,700 stipend, to cover travel and living expenses. $1,800 will be given to you at the beginning of the institute, and the remainder in the last week. We believe that this should cover all of your expenses, but please note that supplements cannot be given if you should find this sum insufficient. More information about expenses can be found on our Institute Essentials page.

During the institute, you may not undertake any teaching assignments or professional activities unrelated to the institute. Participants are instead expected to engage fully in the work of their projects. If for any reason you do not complete the full three weeks, you are required to return a pro-rata portion of your stipend.

Application Instructions

An application is made of three parts: the NEH online cover sheet, a résumé or brief biography, and an application essay. These materials must be mailed to the address below, postmarked no later than March 2, 2010.

The NEH requires applicants to complete a cover sheet at their website. There you should first indicate that you’re applying for a “Summer Seminar or Institute,” and then complete the three pages of forms. At the end, you will be presented a page which you should print three copies of.

Guidelines for the resume and application essay are given in the NEH Application Info and Instructions document, which you should read.

When all of the above is completed, make three collated copies and mail them to:

Also included in the application are two letters of recommendation. These can be mailed to the same address, or faxed to 412-392-4910. But please send all of your own materials by mail, postmarked no later than March 2, 2010.
