INSTITUTE ESSENTIALS

Where and When

The Institute will take place July 12th through the 30th, Monday though Friday, 9am to 4:30pm. Most days we will be in the Music Building on the University of Pittsburgh campus.

Stipend

Teachers selected for the institute will receive a $2,700 stipend to cover all expenses. More information can be found on our Application Info page.

Housing and Costs

Participants will be housed in the Shaydside Inn, a pleasant one-mile walk from the Music Building. This trip can also be made quickly by bus (costing $1.75), or via the Inn’s complimentary shuttle service. The Shadyside Inn includes everything you will need for your stay, including bed linens and a fully equipped kitchen. They also have maid service, and free off-street parking, and are located conveniently near a pharmacy, laundromat and hospital. (More information can be found in our FAQ.)

Overviews of the rooms can be seen at the Inn’s website. We have been assured the following rates: for a two bedroom suite, $110.75 per day (or $55.37 per person); for a studio, $86.10 per day; and for a one bedroom suite, $98.39 per day. For a total of 23 days, the two bedroom will be about $2,540 (or $1270 per person), the studio will be about $1,980, and the one bedroom will be about $2,260.

The two-bedroom suite does in fact have walls separating the two beds. To arrange for a roommate, contact Assistant Director Nicole Longevin-Burroughs at 412-392-8991 or nlburroughs@pittsburghsymphony.org, as early as possible.

Equipment and Internet Access

Participants should bring lap-top computers. Every applicant will be given a subscription to the Naxos Music Library without fee, in order to access pertinent recordings. All rooms at the Shadyside Inn are equipped with complimentary high-speed internet. There is free wifi access in Schenley Park and at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, as well.

Continuing Education Credit

All institute participants will receive a letter explaining the activities of the institute in some detail, and approximating the number of educational hours the institute represents. This letter should be sufficient to qualify you for “internal” credit at your school. If you require some other form of certification, please let us know.

Reading Materials

Copies of Institute Director Joe Horowitz’s book Dvořák in America, and the companion interactive DVD by Robert Winter, will be sent to each participant before the institute. It is expected that you will have read the book beforehand. Other reading materials will be distributed at the institute. The University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Libraries will be accessible to participants.
