Pittsburgh Symphony Heinz Hall: The Grand Lobby

The Grand Lobby The Theater The Plaza

The overall architectural design of Heinz Hall is called rococo, and the lavish style is most impressive in the Grand Lobby. The Grand Lobby was restored in 1970-71 to close to its original condition as a movie theater lobby, but it is considered less gaudy now - gone are the many tapestries and colorful ceiling paintings that once decorated the original hall.

The style is French Court architecture, with a 50 foot high Venetian ceiling. The lighting fixtures are the originals, which have been restored. The two large chandeliers are 8-1/2 feet in diameter by 15 feet high, and weigh over 1 ton each.

The marble in the lobby is the original that was imported from Italy in 1927. The gold trim is gold leaf; not paint, but small flakes of gold that is applied by rubbing it on with a special application device that looks something like a spoon. In the 1970-71 remodeling, two men, Bill Zord and Bob Petree of the A. J. Vater Company, spent eighteen months working full time to apply this throughout the hall.

At Christmas time, a large tree is placed in the center of the Grand Lobby. During that season, there are times when you can come in and view the tree and decorations at no charge. Call 412-392-4900 for more information.
