A Commitment to Excellence

It is no secret that cultural assets such as the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra contribute to the long-term economic growth in the regions they serve. Such organizations also influence the quality of life and enable local businesses to recruit and retain talented employees who demand a vibrant community in which to live and raise families. In addition to providing artistic excellence and incomparable musical experiences inside and outside Heinz Hall, the Pittsburgh Symphony enriches its community with other important economic benefits for the region.

The PSO plays a significant role in downtown Pittsburgh’s development. For example, during the 2005-2006 Season, businesses and residents with downtown zip codes purchased 5,000 Symphony tickets. Clearly, the PSO helps make downtown living more attractive.

The PSO also serves Pittsburgh as an ambassador in both the national and international arenas. During its highly promoted tours, the Symphony’s incomparable artistry and international acclaim identify Pittsburgh as a vital, sophisticated city in which the arts thrive. This reputation, gained through exposure to emerging or established classical music superstars, is essential for ensuring the PSO’s ability to access and engage the best talent in the international market place for Pittsburgh audiences to enjoy. In addition, we have been partnering with the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance, who traveled with the PSO abroad to encourage companies to conduct business in Pittsburgh. As a result of this collaboration, 2 companies, Sycor and Mesotec, have relocated their headquarters to Pittsburgh since 2006.

A Two-Part Investment

Commitment to Excellence, The Campaign for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Annual Fund

The Campaign for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra grants the PSO the singular chance to ensure its economic future with a substantially enlarged endowment, to preserve Heinz Hall and to grow its nationally recognized community engagement programming; however, it is critical that the PSO remains financially responsible and balance its budget each season. Understanding this, the R.P. Simmons Family Gift of $29.5 million was deliberately constructed to inspire ongoing Annual Fund support by stipulating that the PSO must achieve balanced budgets for three consecutive seasons. To accomplish this, the income from the Annual Fund must increase at the same rate of inflation for this period. It is equally essential for the individuals, corporations and foundations to maintain or increase their annual support if the Campaign is going to accomplish its direct and indirect goals.
