The New Leadership Board was formed in 1990 by the Pittsburgh
Symphony Orchestra to assist in educational programming and audience
development. The goal is to create and implement innovative ideas
and projects to develop new audiences and appreciation for the
Pittsburgh Symphony.

Programming
Below are some examples of program originated or implemented by the NLB:
Fiddlesticks
Fiddlesticks is a three-concert series, designed to introduce
children, ages 4-10, to the world of classical music. Kids can
touch and play instruments, meet PSO musicians and more-all before
a lively entertaining 45-minute concert. NLB members work in
conjunctions with PSO Education and Outreach
staff members on this project.
Side-By-Side Concerts
Side-by-side is an opportunity for area music students in
grades 9-12 to have the once-in-a-lifetime experience of playing
side-by-side their PSO counterparts. Applications for side-by-side
players are mailed to high school music teachers in the fall
and the concert is held in the spring.
Unlocking the Classics
Unlocking the Classics offers a series of free adult-education
lectures. PSO Spokesman Ken Meltzer leads musically illustrated
discussions related to one of the PSO's upcoming concerts. PSO
musicians join Ken to discuss and demonstrate a specific composer's
music.
Classical Kids Fund
The Classical Kids Fund is a program which provides enriching
and educational live classical music experiences to under-served
children between the ages of 10 and 18. The NLB raises money
to purchase tickets for Pittsburgh Symphony concerts and presents
them to deserving children.
