“For me, there is no better ending of any symphony than Mahler’s Third. Pure and beautiful, this piece is special to me, and pairs perfectly this season with the sweet Fourth Symphony.” ~ Manfred Honeck

In the second year of the multi-year Mahler Cycle, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra performs Mahler’s Third and Fourth Symphonies and offers insights into this prolific composer by American Mahler specialist Stephen Hefling. Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 is the most classically orchestrated of all his symphonies. The Symphony closes with a soprano voice singing sweetly about Heaven. The 2009-2010 Season closes with Mahler’s Symphony No. 3, a musical expression of the emergence of nature with a look towards Heaven.

Look for exhibits in the hall that will highlight the periods in Mahler’s life when these symphonies were written.
