Back to March 12

Daytona Beach

I was awake for the sunrise this morning and went for a bike ride back to Longboat key. The weather was perfect again. After the bike ride I packed the car and went back to the Ritz Carleton for breakfast…this time it was eggs benedict and it was great.

The drive to Daytona Beach was smooth until the last part of the trip. It was biker week in Daytona and the place was packed.

The orchestra arrived at 2pm and none of the rooms were ready. Most took it in stride and went for a walk on the beach. That is one of the difficult parts of touring, the rooms often are not ready and it is essential that you have time to practice and prepare for the concert.

The wait for the room was worth the view!

The tour was a success and it was a pleasure to work with Maestro Dutoit. I liked his interpretation of Romeo and Juliette (Prokofiev). After Gainesville the quality of the lodging and the weather improved thus the morale of the orchestra was lifted also…this helps create inspired concerts.

Warming up is the most important part of any performance. The more effort and care you put into your warm up, the better the performance.

Looking back over the last week it was a good food tour due to wonderful Florida seafood and that amazing chocolate lava cake at the Ritz Carleton. In Daytona I didn’t even order dessert just to not spoil the memory of that apocalyptic chocolate cake.

I’ll wake up and leave for PA in the morning. I’m not sure if I’ll try to make it one shot or not. I miss my family so I might try to make the entire 18 hour drive in one day. I hear there is good skiing this week at 7 springs resort so that might be another good reason to get back home.

Thanks for joining me and the PSO on this tour of Florida!
