I first noticed Stephanie Tretick during the takeoff portion of an airline flight to the West coast. We were on tour with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra with Andre Previn conducting and the jet was on its takeoff run. I heard the final sections of The Brandenburgh Concerto in F - it’s a work well know to all trumpet players - and Stephanie was using her voice and vibrating her lips at the same time to re-create the trumpet part. She reached the final high note just as the landing gear left the ground and all around her broke out in applause. An avid “do it yourselfer” Stephanie can repair computers and sweat pipes - she even installed her own water heater in the basement of her home. She is in a word…versatile…a wonderful violist but she is also a great violinist.
I remember her playing a solo violin concerto at Hartwood Acres and the concerto she played was composed by her late father (It had a beautiful, lyrical trumpet part in the slow movement) She played with elegance, grace and poise and I believe her father would have been proud. That is our Steph.
