Clarinet reeds
Clarinet reeds are arranged on a player’s stand, ready for the concert. They have been marked with the player’s coding system for identification. Made of cane, each reed has slightly different characteristics which affect tone color, articulation, and longevity.

Tommy Thompson demonstrates
The single flat clarinet reed is fastened to the back of the instrument’s mouthpiece with a band called a ligature. These bands can be simple ones of metal, or of high-tech materials such as the plastic arrangement used here by PSO’s Tommy Thompson.

Bassoon reeds
Bassoon reeds are double, two pieces of cane bound together so that they buzz against each other. The process of making reeds is a demanding, but necessary part of single- and double-reed woodwind players’ professional obligation.
