About This Performance

This performance, featuring young American conductor James Gaffigan, opens with a piece by returning Composer of the year Mason Bates, who blends contemporary symphonic music and electronic. Gabriela Montero then dazzles in Ravel's Piano Concerto in G Major, which is soaked in jazz elements throughout a romantic concerto structure. (Don't rush off when the concerto ends — Montero will treat us with her signature encore improvisations!) Wagner's poignant "Good Friday Spell," from his final, revelatory masterpiece Parsifal, follows and describes the innocent main character's attempt to redeem himself of sin and strive for salvation. It is follows by Mendelssohn's stirring Symphony No. 5, entitled "Reformation," confessing faith in the Lutheran Church.
