ELGAR: Excerpts and Discussion of “Symphony No. 1 in A-flat major, Opus 55”
ELGAR: Symphony No. 1
TCHAIKOVSKY: Variations on a Rococo Theme
STRAUSS: Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks

Sir Mark Elder, Music Director of the Halle Orchestra, makes his Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra debut in a program that begins with music from his native England, Elgar's Symphony No. 1.  A noted expert in the music of Elgar, Elder's acclaimed recordings have earned him continuous praise for his probing and committed performances and he will no doubt bring his own distinctive stamp to this sweeping and lyrical canvas.  Principal Cellist Anne Martindale Williams takes center stage to perform Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme, a charming set of variations teeming with grace, symmetry and brilliance in homage to the classical style.  The program comes to a rousing conclusion with Strauss's Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks, an all-out orchestral virtuosic showcase chronicling Till's colorful misadventures.
