Concert Update

Cancellation, Jan 21 | Conductor and Programming Update, Jan 22+23

Due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols that affect the number of musicians available to perform, the Pittsburgh Symphony regrettably will not be able to perform the announced Beethoven piano concerti program with Rudolf Buchbinder, but instead will offer “PSO Conductor Showcase: Baroque and Beyond” led by its two new assistant conductors Moon Doh and Jacob Joyce.

In preparation for the program change, the Pittsburgh Symphony also announced that the Friday night concert is cancelled. The Saturday and Sunday concerts will be played at the previously announced times, with the new program. Tickets for the previously announced concerts should be retained and used for the Saturday and Sunday concerts; ticket holders for the Friday night concert will be contacted for options.

The Program

[Updated as of 1/18/2022]

Jacob Joyce, conductor

Arcangelo Corelli Concerto Grosso No. 4 in D major, Opus 6
Francesco Geminiani Concerto Grosso No. 4 in F major, H.135
Igor Stravinsky Concerto in D major for String Orchestra

Moon Doh, conductor

Béla Bartók Divertimento for String Orchestra
Béla Bartók (arr. Willner) Rumanian Folk Dances

The Beethoven concerti program with Maestro Rudolf Buchbinder is a special one, so we very much look forward to rescheduling that program in the future. We are pleased to be able to welcome to the podium for their Pittsburgh subscription debuts both of our new assistant conductors, Moon Doh and Jacob Joyce. This is a great opportunity for Pittsburgh to get to know two exceptionally talented and highly acclaimed young conductors.
―Melia Tourangeau, president and CEO

About this Performance

Travel the landscape of instrumental music from the joyous Baroque voices of Corelli and Geminiani to the 20th century powerhouses of Stravinsky and Bartók, all conducted by new PSO assistant conductors, Moon Doh and Jacob Joyce.

This program juxtaposes Corelli & Geminiani’s Baroque style with Stravinsky & Bartók’s revival of this 17th century artform. Hear how the latter two composers imitate the voices of the time before, but in a more angular and modernized way.

Then be transported to the Eastern European countryside in Bartók’s Rumanian Folk Dances, influenced by the composer’s rustic travels to the backcountry collecting traditional Gypsy folk songs.
