The Program

ROSSINI: Overture to William Tell
DAVID LUDWIG: Concerto for Two Clarinets and Two Bassoons - World Premiere / PSO Commission
STRAUSS: Ein Heldenleben

About this Performance

Rossini’s thrilling “William Tell” Overture has long captivated as the theme to “The Lone Ranger.”  Then, members of the wind section present the world premiere of David Ludwig’s Concerto for Two Clarinets and Two Bassoons.   A tour-de-force for four soloists!   Grandson of the great pianist Rudolf Serkin, Ludwig is “a composer with something urgent to say,” declares The New York Times.  This program concludes with Richard Strauss’ glowing self-portrait, “Ein Heldenleben” – “A Hero’s Life.”

Music and Art

with the Carnegie Museum of Art

The language of music is common to all generations and nations; it is understood by everybody, since it is understood with the heart.
―Gioachino Rossini

The dawn played a significant role in both sight and sound for the Italian composer Gioachino Rossini and Swiss and French designers Jean Dunand and Jean Dupas. Aurora, the mythical goddess of morning, commands her horses across the massive sculptural relief that was once installed on the luxury ocean liner Normandie. Rossini’s Overture begins slowly as a reference to dawn and builds with the anticipation of an approaching storm.
