Manfred Honeck Returns to the New York Philharmonic May 3 through May 8, 2018

"But this conventional billing became spectacularly unconventional in the hands of Manfred Honeck, the music director of the reinvigorated Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra…A modest man with immoderate talent, he inspires a rare concentration in [the New York Philharmonic]. In Brahms' Fourth Symphony, he coaxed a sound much closer to the deep, golden hue of the Vienna Philharmonic …than the glossier, glassier tone this orchestra usually exudes."

PITTSBURGH, PA—Manfred Honeck, Music Director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO), returns to the New York Philharmonic on May 3, 2018 for the first time since February 2017. He will conduct four concerts in a program that includes works by Tchaikovsky and Sibelius as well as Dvořák’s Rusalka Fantasy, an orchestral suite arranged by Honeck. This month, Honeck continues to celebrate his 10th season as Music Director of the PSO with performances in Pittsburgh including Verdi’s Requiem and Brahms’ Symphony No. 4.

A frequent guest conductor with the New York Philharmonic, Honeck will lead the orchestra in Sibelius’ Violin Concerto, with soloist Nikolaj Znaider, selections from Tchaikovksy’s Sleeping Beauty, and Dvořák’s Rusalka Fantasy, an orchestral suite of music from Dvorak’s beloved opera arranged by Honeck himself and orchestrated by Tomas Ille. Honeck completed the Rusalka Fantasy in 2015 and first performed it with the PSO in the same year.

In addition to Honeck’s appearances with the New York Philharmonic in May, this month he leads the PSO in two programs performed in Pittsburgh’s iconic Heinz Hall. From April 20 to 22, Honeck conducts the PSO in Steven Stucky’s Silent Spring, commissioned and premiered by the PSO in 2012, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto with violinist James Ehnes, and Brahms’ Symphony No. 4. On April 27 and 29, Honeck will lead the PSO in performances of Verdi’s Requiem.

In the 2018/2019 season, Honeck will return to the New York Philharmonic in a Viennese-inspired program highlighting the music of Johann Strauss II in November 2018 and Mozart’s Requiem in March 2019.
