25/26 Schooltime @ Heinz Hall Classroom Resources

Introduce students to the orchestra and nurture a love of music! For generations, teachers have brought their students to Heinz Hall to experience live orchestral music. As part of this long-standing Schooltime tradition, the 25/26 season invites classrooms to explore American music in celebration of our nation’s 250th anniversary. Each unit features a PSO concert and curriculum-aligned classroom resources created by our Learning & Engagement team. Schooltime is provided for free to all schools; registration is required. 

 
Danbi Leads the School Parade

What does it mean to be part of a community?
Join the Pittsburgh Symphony for a musical rendition of Danbi Leads the School Parade by Anna Kim. Students will meet Danbi, a young girl who learns to embrace her Korean identity as she makes friends in her new American school. Utilize these classroom resources with your students to enhance their experience at our Schooltime @ Heinz Hall performance of Danbi Leads the School Parade. This beautiful story will be read by the author, Anna Kim, as her colorful illustrations of Danbi’s adventures are projected above the stage.

The American Dream

What is the American Dream?
Many people pursue “the American Dream” but what does that mean? Why do people come to this country? What do they hope to achieve? What is your dream for the nation? Explore these questions and more through works that celebrate the aspirations of Americans across time. Featuring Peter Boyer’s Ellis Island: The Dream of America, a stunning multimedia piece that combines theatre, photos and letters from actual immigrants who came to the United States through Ellis Island, this program celebrates the diverse people who make up our nation.

Made in the USA

What has America made?
Associate Conductor Jacob Joyce and a cast of special guest artists lead this exploration of American innovation and invention through music. From the suspension bridge and Morse code to baseball, jazz, space exploration and more, prepare to celebrate inventions made in the USA while considering how innovation has shaped American identity. Music will be our guide as we take a tour of inventions across time and reflect on the lasting impact they have had on society.

Meet the Orchestra

What is an American orchestra?
The Pittsburgh Symphony is excited to announce a special All-American edition of our popular Meet the Orchestra program! This new concert features repertoire by American composers and highlights what makes the American orchestra different, from seating to instrumentation. Students will meet each instrument family of the orchestra, learn how they make sound, hear how instrument families work together to create orchestral music, and even have a chance to be the conductor!
